Despite knowing the importance of keywords and key phrases and many other useful tips, the fact is Internet searches call for lot of patience and perseverance.

With proliferation of online businesses and millions of existing websites and many more getting added everyday, searching the internet effectively is becoming a Herculean task. In this computer age, the need to use the internet to search for resources is not escapable.

But the Internet however holds an inconceivably vast storage of information and attempting to obtain the correct information can be a daunting task.

But, there are many search engines that effectively retrieve the information one wants. Apart from using the apt keywords, the user has to specifically inform the search engine what is required - particularly if the user is not searching for a generic topic.

By now, almost all internet users must be aware, that internet search engines can search enormous databases of web pages with the aid of titles, keywords or text. As the internet keeps expanding at a rapid pace and more pages are getting added by the day, effective searching calls for innovative approaches and fresh strategies.

It goes without saying that the more specific the search, the more likely the search engine will dish out what one wants. The user can optimize the potential of search engines by learning how to use them effectively.

The golden rule is the more pointedly one makes the search, the greater the possibility of finding what is sought.

Role of Keywords

With some rare exceptions, most engines await appropriate keywords to do the search. Most users submit scant number of keywords per search. For an effective search, six to eight apt words - preferably nouns and objects – are needed.

It is best to avoid articles (like a, an, the) and pronouns that search engines resent. Make sure to strictly avoid verbs and also, to the extent possible, adjectives. Conjunctions (like and, or) and prepositions (like to, from) are best avoided in search queries. Finally, it is good to completely get rid of unwanted or irrelevant words and redundant terms.

Role of Key Phrases

Combination of few apt keywords may be called key phrase. The combinations of these key words must be found in the same order in the documents they appear. Some search engines provide specific options for phrases whereas some others disallow them completely. It is reported that most engines permit key phrase if provided within double quotation marks. To be safe, better check the Help files of the search engine to know what it accepts.

Phrase searching can be ideally resorted to, when the user is searching for words that appear next to each other. If the user is searching for more than one phrase, the phrases can be separated by a comma.

Most professionals advise using capital letters for proper nouns as some search engines may distinguish between capital and small letters. But one should scrupulously avoid capitalizing a common noun or other words as they may damage the prospect of good returns.

It is a fact that many search engines are insensitive to case and the user has the liberty of even using a mix of cases. Notwithstanding this, lowercase is the safer form to use for general searches. It is quite likely that few search engines may deal with punctuations somewhat differently - in such cases, better consult the Help file.

It is to be acknowledged that a productive internet search may entail quite a few attempts. But it has to be borne in mind that there are several million documents online and strangely there is no master system for organizing this information!
