How-to article and AdWords guide showing the reader how to use PPC search engine marketing and the AdWords tool to generate traffic and revenue from existing content.

The Google AdWords Keyword Research Tool is designed primarily to help AdWords advertisers to determine the cost of targeting specific keyword phrases, along with an estimation of the likely target audience.

It can also be used to search for keywords that accurately sum up an article, so that the author can tag the content appropriately so that it can be found by people looking for information on a given topic.

Using the AdWords PPC Keyword Research Tool

The Keywords Research Tool will provide a variety of metrics that can be used to evaluate a keyword phrase. The two most useful, from the point of view of content creation, are the 'Estimated Average CPC' and 'Search Volume' metrics. Together, they can be used to isolate keyword phrases that can be profitably dominated.

To arrive at the list, the following is a step by step guide to using the Keywords Research Tool with existing article prose.

Step 1 : Highlight the article text in the native editor, and copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl-C for Windows users).

Step 2 : Open the Keywords Research Tool

Step 3 : Select the 'Website Content' option from the 'How would you like to generate keywords ideas' box

Step 4 : Pull down the 'Or enter your own text in the box below' data entry area and copy the text into it (Ctrl-V for Windows users)

Step 5 : Click 'Get Keyword Ideas'

The result will be a grouped collection of keywords, along with their AdWords metrics.

They can be ungrouped and regrouped by using the 'Group keywords by common terms' checkbox. It is usually a good idea to leave them grouped, as these follow the Google search engine results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with PPC Keyword Research

To obtain the 'Average CPC' values for each keyword, it is necessary to select it from the 'Choose Columns to Display' drop-down list box. Once chosen, the interface will take a few seconds to refresh, and usually adds the CPC values to the left of the results.

The result set can then be sorted by 'Average Search Engine Volume' or 'Estimated Average CPC', depending on the goals of the researcher. To maximize AdWords revenue, for example, one should choose to promote keywords (via tags or page meta tags) with a high CPC value.

On the other hand, for maximum traffic, choose a keyword with a high average search volume. However, this tactic must be followed with care (targeting only 3 or 4 word niche phrases) if the desired result is dominance in search engine results pages.
