Press releases, guest blogging, social nertworking sites, content upload, and competitor research are great ways to get backlinks for free.

Getting backlinks for free is not that difficult but it certainly is a time-consuming activity. What is important for backlinks is their quality, not their quantity. Backlinks from reputable sites with high PR is what counts for SEO rankings.

What is more, if the link has the 'nofollow' attribute, which cheater webmasters sometimes add without informing about that, then this backlink is practically useless for SEO rankings (though it will probably bring in some traffic).

There are many traditional ways get backlinks, such as link exchanges, posting at forums and directories, submissions to article directories, comments on forums, and so on, but very often these links come with the 'nofollow' attribute. Buying links is not a recommendable practice because search engines penalize for that. So, if a site needs backlinks, the webmaster should resort to some less known ways to get backlinks. Here are some of them.

Press Releases Can Bring Permanent Backlinks

There are many sites where press releases can be submitted. Some of these sites are specialized for press releases only, while others are news sites and if the press release is about an important event – i.e. the company has a new CEO or a new product has been launched, there is a chance that the press release will be accepted for free.

Get Backlinks As a Guest Blogger

Guest blogging becomes more and more popular. Generally the idea is to submit a short blog post and get a backlink and/or a byline. Sometimes it is even possible to get monetary compensation for the guest blog post.

Profiles at Social Networking Sites Can Also Bring an Inbound Link

Profiles at social networking sites are another place where links are allowed but be careful because many social networking sites use the 'nofollow' attribute. Still, the traffic a popular profile can draw is not to be underestimated.

Upload Content in Exchange for a Backlink

Another way to get a free backlink is to upload content in exchange for a backlink. The backlink is free but when one calculates the time to create the content, this is not a cheap option. Still, if there is no requirement for unique content, it is possible to upload content created on another occasion and still get a quality backlink.

Use a Backlink Checker to See Where Your Competitors Get Backlinks from

Finally, when one is absolutely stuck with ideas where to get backlinks from, a good approach is to check with a backlink checker the sites where competitors get backlinks from. It is not always possible to get backlinks from exactly the same sites but the list of competitor backlinks can give pretty cute ideas.

These are not the only less known ways to get quality backlinks. There are many more and the only limit is the creativity of the webmaster.
