Gone are the days when it was possible to create a website, place it online and welcome a flood of eager internet visitors. Organic search engine rankings are now vital, as the internet has become an extremely competitive playground for millions of webmasters who are all struggling to attract the attention of a rushed and busy internet audience.

One of the most effective ways to increase internet traffic is to attract new visitors through organic search engine results. Unlike other paid advertising methods that can be used to attain website traffic, having high ranking organic search results is free and often more beneficial as users are more likely to click on organic sites than advertisements.

What are Organic Search Engine Rankings?

When a user needs to find something online, chances are they use an internet search engine to find what they are looking for. Services such as Google, Yahoo and AOL are popular. In order to find what they are interested in, a user will enter a search phrase or keywords into the search engine and in return are given a list of recommended sites in order of relevancy. It should be every webmaster's goal to be placed high within those search results.

In order to rank highly in search engines, the most important piece of information for a webmaster is understanding what keywords or search terms are used by internet searchers within their targeted niche to find information online. These keywords are generally made up of single keywords, multiple keywords or long tail keywords. It is great to have a mixture of these search terms utilised across a variety of webpages and topics.

There are various tools that can be used to locate relevant search terms for niche markets. These include things such as WordTracker and Google’s own keyword research tool. Once the most relevant keywords are determined, it's then time to start ranking as high as possible for those terms. Starting with a mixture of long tail keywords and more highly competitive keywords is always recommended.

How to Rank Highly in Search Engines.

While search engine optimisation on the whole is a fairly basic principal, many webmasters choose to initiate the expertise of SEO Consultants. There are however some very basic ways to help increase search rankings.

  • Relevant Content:Great, relevant on site content that utilises each targeted keyword. It's best practice to limit the keyword focus of each page of a website to one or two chosen keywords or phrases.

It is vital to find similar websites, forums and blogs as well as relevant business directories and even article directories to request or place backlinks. A varied mix of back links will always help create higher long term rankings.
  • Keep Content Fresh:Having a blog is often one way that webmasters keep their content relevant and fresh. Search engines favor relevant, fresh content. A blog helps search engines to percieve that current information appears on site and is more relevant for searchers.

While newer websites or highly competitive markets often include an intensive pay per click campaign to increase visitor rates early, maintaining this expense long term is often not viable. Understanding organic search engine rankings and developing a plan to rank highly for extremely targeted keywords is a long term plan that should be used by every webmaster or business website owner in order to keep regular traffic coming and increasing over time.
